What is a Mind? is back with new ‘Ask Mark’ questions and answers published in weekly video sessions

Course begins on 31 October 2016
What is a Mind?, a free online course in the field of neuropsychoanalysis from the University of Cape Town, offered in partnership with FutureLearn, is being offered for a third time. In this course you are invited to explore pertinent scientific and philosophical concepts for understanding our own minds.

Led by Professor Mark Solms, Chair of Neuropsychology at the University of Cape Town, What is a Mind? adopts a multidisciplinary approach to explore four defining properties of the mind – subjectivity, consciousness, intentionality and agency. Over six weeks, Professor Solms uses these four properties to help us think about the fundamental questions: what it is to be a mind, why we have a mind and what it feels like to have a mind.

You can find out more in Prof Solms’ post for the FutureLearn blog: What is a mind? – One of the great mysteries of our time

What is a Mind? has run a few times already, and has been very well received by a global body of online learners, making Class Central’s top 50 MOOCs of all time time list (fifth overall), as well as Class Central’s top ten MOOCs list for 2015, and was the second best psychology related MOOC for 2015.

The course attracts a global audience, with participants from a wide range of backgrounds including professionals, students and people with a general interest in the topic. This collection of voices adds another layer of richness to the perspectives shared on the course – read one learner’s review. The course is running again from 31 October 2016, and anyone can enrol for free on the FutureLearn site.

Designed to fit around the lives of working people, the course runs over six weeks and assumes you might spend up to three hours per week, at your own convenience. It comprises short video lectures, some readings and activities such as quizzes, short peer-reviewed assignments and plenty opportunities for discussion. We choose several learner-submitted questions each week, which Prof Solms addresses in a weekly video recorded sessions. Once you are signed up for the course, you are also welcome to work through it later at your own pace, as the course will remain open and all materials will remain available.
