This is both the first neuropsychoanalysis congress to be held in Spain and the 25th anniversary congress of our international society (due to the two years lost to COVID). It is therefore a fitting occasion for us to take stock of what we have learnt over the past 25 years and to confront honestly what we still do not know about the brain mechanisms underlying the psychodynamic processes we treat clinically. To provide direction, this congress will focus especially on two topics: (1) How can we bridge the gulf that divides the level of analysis which governs experimental neuroscience and biological psychiatry, on the one hand – the level of ‘molecules’ – and that which governs the lived clinical reality of psychopathology and psychotherapy, on the other – the level of ‘mind’? (2) Can neuropsychoanalysis point the way towards more clinically useful (and more precise) approaches to psychodiagnosis than those which are provided currently by the DSM and ICD? Diagnosis requires more than a label; what is needed is a practical way of formulating our cases which leads to understanding the meaning and mechanisms behind the symptoms. We invite submission of abstracts on these two topics, and on any other topics (both experimental and clinical) that can help us to continue to narrow the gap between molecules and mind, for another 25 years!
