Please note that this event is now SOLD OUT.
Since the 1998 publication of Jaak Panksepp’s Affective Neuroscience, establishing seven basic and fundamentally conscious affective systems, neuropsychoanalytic researchers have evolved an approach to development and therapy that emphasizes the individual’s capacity to update past experience by contrasting prior expectations with new observations from their environment. This conference will apply neuropsychoanalytic thinking to theories of adolescent development and therapy. Relational and cultural themes will be explored in addition to aspects of adolescent mind and brain functioning.

Learning Objectives for Symbol and Synapse:
- Participants will be able to identify seven basic affective systems and explain why affect is conscious.
- Participants will be able to explain why, according to neuropsychoanalytic theory, therapy needs to rely more on observations in the transference relationship than on patient memories
- Participants will be able to explain how psychoanalytic understanding of adolescent development and therapy benefits from a neuropsychoanalytic explanation of affect and memory in adolescence
- Participants will be able to describe the similarities and differences between Panksepp’s seven affects and Freud’s, Klein’s and Sullivan’s views on affect. Also, participants will be able to explain the differences between current research perspectives on memory and Freud’s understanding of memory
- Participants will be able to explain the neuropsychoanalytic method for detecting what is motivating a patient’s conflicts and behavior
- Participants will be able to explain how therapy with adolescents can be conducted with a neuropsychoanalytic method
- Participants will be able to identify two common features of the neuropsychoanalytic theory of how and why therapy works and the Relational/Interpersonal theory of why and how therapy works
