The SAP Annual Lecture

The self and alien self in psyche and soma

London, United Kingdom | Mar 28, 2020

This event has been cancelled

Speaker: Susan Mizen
Respondent: Richard Carvalho

Time: 10:00 – 12:30
At 120 Belsize Lane, London NW3 5BA

Abstract: The most profound forms of relational disturbance are characterised by a disordered sense of what belongs to whom. This applies both to mental phenomena and the body. Susan Mizen will describe her experience working therapeutically with people suffering with this level of disturbance to illustrate new insights arising from this patient group and neuroscience about the embodied self. She will reconsider the concept of the self from Jungian and psychoanalytic perspectives in the light of these observations.

Dr Susan Mizen is a Jungian Analyst and Consultant Psychiatrist in Psychotherapy who has worked as a Consultant in the NHS for over 20 years. Most recently she developed an analytic, neuroscientific therapeutic model, The Relational Affective Model, within a psychotherapeutic day and outpatient programme as an alternative to locked placements for patients with severe relational disturbance. She is currently investigating the neuroscience hypothesis underpinning this model. Chair of the Psychotherapy Faculty Executive at the Royal College of Psychiatrists between 2014 and 2018, she now chairs the Talking Therapies Task Force, making the health economic case for investment in psycho-analytic psychotherapy in the NHS. She continues working in private practice as an analytical psychologist.

Dr Richard Carvalho is a Fellow of the Royal College of Psychiatrists, Member of the Tavistock Society, and a Training and Supervising Analyst with the Society of Analytical Psychology. He was a consultant psychotherapist for many years at St Mary’s Hospital, Paddington.

Chair: Warren Colman
