New Developments in Neuroscience and Psychoanalysis – Tamara Fischmann
How dreams may be an indicator for psychotherapeutic change and how dreams relate to memory reconsolidation
New Developments in Neuroscience and Psychoanalysis Series
This exciting online series hosted by the Neuropsychoanalysis Association showcases the cutting-edge knowledge that is currently emanating from neuroscientific disciplines and the field of psychoanalysis. The series includes presentations from leading authorities that will enhance neuropsychoanalytic understanding, while at the same time inspire our multidisciplinary community. The series will demonstrate the amazing variety of topics that are relevant to the fascinating field of neuropsychoanalysis.

The webinar will be 2 hours long.
The question of how dreams, besides symptom reduction can be an indicator of psychotherapeutic change will be a focus of this webinar. To this end, instruments for measuring lasting changes in unconscious mental functioning will be presented. Based on the dream generation model of Moser and von Zeppelin and integrating a large interdisciplinary knowledge base of contemporary dream and sleep research, a research group has developed a valid and reliable coding system for analyzing manifest dreams, the Zurich Dream Process Coding System (ZDPCS) on the one hand, and a questionnaire in development on the other. It is hypothesized that the transformation in dreams measured by the ZDPCS is the result of memory processes around unresolved traumatic complexes in the dream state in an attempt to integrate them in one’s life-narrative. In this context, the question of what role dreaming plays in the reconsolidation of memories will be explored. To this end, neuroscientific findings on affect and their relation to the Freudian structural model will be considered.

Tamara Fischmann, Dr. rer. med., Dipl. Psych., Professor of Clinical Psychology and Psychoanalysis at the International Psychoanalytic University (IPU) Berlin. Psychoanalyst (DPV/IPA) in private practice, Frankfurt. Teaching analyst at the Anna Freud Institute, Frankfurt. Main areas of interest are psychoanalytic-empirical dream and memory research in dialogue with neuroscience (projects: BFT – biological function of dreams; FRED – Frankfurt fMRI/EEG Depression Study). In addition, publications in the context of interdisciplinary research in bioethics (Ethical dilemmas as a result of prenatal diagnostics, 2010). Another area of interest is psychoanalytic attachment research (early prevention in “children-at-risk”) involving neuroscience (projects: NeuroBind – Neuroimgaing of attachment; EVA – Evaluation of two early prevention programs: Early Steps and Fistless).
